Tips for Completing Applications

  • Read directions at least twice before writing anything on a form. Follow directions exactly and, if possible, practice on a duplicated copy first.

  • Use a pen (unless directed not to) with a fine to a medium point in black or blue ink. Print clearly, neatly, and correctly. Check spelling and do not erase or scratch out answers. Think each answer through before you write it down.

  • Answer all questions completely and honestly. Be positive and highlight your strengths. Print “N/A” for “not applicable” after questions that do not pertain to your situation.

  • Give your complete address including zip code. Give a telephone number where you can be reached and the hours you will be there. Leave a second “back-up” number, if possible, or note that an answering machine is available.

  • Include all positions for which you are interested in applying for.

  • Parking violations or traffic tickets are not misdemeanors or felonies.

  • List your most recent job first and then go backwards. Include part-time jobs and unpaid jobs unless instructed not to do so. Have this information written down and with you so that it may be accurately transferred to the application form.

  • A resume may be attached if you wish, unless stated otherwise. However, do NOT say on your application form: “see attached resume.” This may invalidate your application. Be sure to fill in the information completely.

  • If you know what the job pays, you may write that figure in the space for “salary”. If you do not know the figure, write “open,” “negotiable,” or “going rate.”

  • When listing reasons for leaving a previous job or jobs, give only positive answers if possible. Say things like “opportunity for advancement”, “promotional opportunity”, “advancement possibility”, etc. or such things, but be truthful.
